Kapshagay was formed in 1970.

Population: In Kapshagay region there is 50.7 thousand people, of which urban population is 36.9 thousand people, rural population is 13,8 thousand people.

Location: Kapshagay region is located in south-central part of Almaty region on the shore of Kapshagay reservoir, 70 km from Almaty.

Territory of the region: 3.6 thousand sq. km. On the territory of the region there are 2 rural districts in which there are 11 settlements.

Average population density: about 12.8 per sq. km.

Kapshagay is the satellite town of Almaty, which arose on construction of Kapshagay Hydro Electro Station on Ili River.  Kapshagay Reservoir is one of the largest in Kazakhstan, its length - 100 km, width - 25 km.  The most developed area is the northern coast, where there are numerous recreational places and guest houses.

Most of the houses are coastal complex, which are usually referred to as the urban area recreation. Almost all recreation areas have service network (boats, water bikes, yachts). In summer there is very hot, the air temperature sometimes reaches 40 degrees. Water temperature in May-June is +18, +20 degrees, in July-August it is + 22, +28 degrees.

Road and rail transport lines intersecting in Kapshagay, connecting China, Russia and Central Asia, make the city attractive for development of different business structures.
